IN VEIN

A Memoir · Four Generations. One Bloodline. A Legacy of Service.

The Title Song

In Vein

“In Vein” didn't start as a song. It started as a question I couldn't shake while writing the memoir of the same name: what actually gets passed down in a family? Not just eye color or a last name, but the willingness to run toward trouble instead of away from it. My grandfather, Carl Brantly Murphy, paid for that willingness with his life in 1965, standing up for workers who weren't even his own blood. My dad carried it through Vietnam and then into a career as a paramedic and firefighter, still running toward people in their worst moments decades after he came home. And now I watch my own daughter carry it into the Navy, into the role of a Corpsman, choosing without ever being told to choose.

This song is my attempt to put that bloodline into music; four generations, one thread of service running through all of them, whether they ever called it that or not. It's not a war song or a tribute to any one person. It's about the thing that runs in vein, quietly, from one generation to the next, until it shows up again in someone who never even met the person who started it.
