A Memoir · Four Generations. One Bloodline. A Legacy of Service.
Missi Murphy is the author of In Vein and founder of In Vein Publishing, based in Douglasville, Georgia. She also creates under the brand From Song to Screen, where music and storytelling meet. Songs, chapters, and family history all drawn from the same well.
Writing, for Missi, has never been separate from family. In Vein traces four generations of one family’s bloodline of service, starting with her grandfather, Carl Brantly Murphy, a U.S. Navy sailor who was killed in 1965 for standing by what was right: hiring workers regardless of race. From there the story carries through her father Bill “Murf the Surf” Murphy’s combat service in Vietnam and the decades he spent afterward running toward emergencies as a paramedic and firefighter, to her own daughter’s enlistment as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman today; the bloodline returning to the Navy it started in. Four generations. One bloodline. A legacy of service.
Missi started In Vein Publishing because these were stories she couldn’t not tell. The kind that gets passed down at kitchen tables and on front porches long before anyone writes them down. Alongside the memoir, she writes original songs rooted in the same family history, including “In Vein” itself, the title track built around the same question that drives the book: What is it that actually gets passed down, generation to generation, when a family keeps choosing to run toward the strangers who need them? Her writing, whether it’s a song or a chapter, stays plain and honest on purpose. She’d rather a reader feel something true than be impressed by clever language.
